Built in 1220 by Jean d'Aspres on the foundations of an
11th century castle. Modified in 17th century, the main Louis XVII
building is set between two tours; it overlooks the valley du Drac.
Magnificent French-style ceilings and the black marble 16th century
staircase illustrate the castle's fascinating history:
- 6/7 September 1596 : meeting at Aspres of the reformed from
Dauphiné and from Provence, asking the King for a decree
in their favour (this resulted in the Edict of Nantes).
- 1814: patronage of the Comte d'Artois, brother to Louis XVI
and future Charles X.
- 5 March 1815: reception of Napoleon in the chateau lounge, (on
his return from Elba).
- 1817: Pope Pious VII met the Chatelain d'Aspres
